Dr Jack Ferguson
Dr Ferguson graduated from Strathclyde University, Glasgow with Bsc (Hons) in Biology with chemistry and a PhD in Bioengineering.
He took employment in the cosmetics industry (Beecham Products, Leatherhead) to develop and test skin and sun care products and other cosmetics, and has now spent a total of 25 years in the industry.
Fifteen of those years were with The Boots Company in Nottingham in cosmetic development laboratories. This was followed by five years as R&D Director for Oriflame International in Dublin, Ireland.
Dr Ferguson established his own independent consulting and product development company (Skinnovation Ltd) in October 2000.
Dr Ferguson is a specialist in sun product development and testing, a field, which he has become internationally known. He has been active in industry committees defining sun product test methods. During his period at Boots, Dr Ferguson was jointly responsible for the development and introduction of the Boots UVA Star Rating System for sun products, which is used throughout UK and Ireland.
Dr Ferguson has presented verbal and written papers on a number of topics in cosmetic science including sun protection, and has been a consultant on cosmetic product claims since May 2001 to the Broadcasting Advertising Clearance Centre.
Dr. Ferguson is also a trustee and Hon Treasurer to FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experimentation) charity since January 2004.
Professor Christoper Griffiths
Christopher Griffiths, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, is Foundation Professor of Dermatology, University of Manchester, UK and Head of the Greater Manchester Dermatology Centre, Manchester, UK.
Christopher received his BSc (1st Class Hons) (1976), MB and BS (1979) degrees from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University and his MD (1991) also from London University. After training in dermatology at St Mary’s Hospital, London and the University of Michigan (1987-93), where he was on faculty in the department of dermatology, Christopher returned to the UK in 1994.
Christopher developed the “hub-and-spoke” model of dermatology services, a forerunner of managed clinical network, for Greater Manchester and instigated the North West Regional Dermatology Training Scheme. In 1994 he introduced a multidisciplinary clinic for severe psoriasis – the Manchester Psoriasis Service – awarded Hospital Doctor Dermatology Team of the Year Award 2002, and has received many awards and honours; named lectureships at national and international meetings include the 1998 Dowling Oration and 2003 St John’s Oration.
Christopher is also a past Chairman of the British Society for Investigative Dermatology and President Elect of the British Association of Dermatologists. Is on the editorial boards of 8 scientific journals, including the British Journal of Dermatology and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology and is author of 240 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, co-editor of the premier international textbook of dermatology - Rook’s Textbook and has a long-standing interest in inflammatory skin disease – particularly psoriasis. Research interests include immunological mechanisms of psoriasis, immunotherapy, including the new biological agents, and the “brain-skin axis”.
